Sophie is tasked with helping to train the magical creature so that the Alicorn can be revealed to the people of the lost cities as a sign of hope, and Sophie wants to believe that the recent drama and anguish is gone for good. This scene used to be part of the aurenflare sequence and was a moment I created to show that something might be wrong with Sophie’s abilities. And it helps that living at Havenfield means getting to spend time with rare, precious species-including the first female Alicorn, who shows herself to Sophie and trusts no one but her. ![]() Sophie is settling in nicely to her new home and her new life in the world of the lost cities. ![]() ![]() The novel follows the plot of the fairy tale pretty closely, but I was as engrossed as if I’d never heard the story before.ġ. In East, the protagonist is Rose, the youngest daughter in a large sixteenth-century Norwegian family. But before I give you Kailana’s questions and my answers, a short introduction: East is a retelling of the Norwegian fairy tale “East of the Sun, West of the Moon”, an animal bridegroom tale with many similarities to the myth of Cupid and Psyche. We decided that we’d each ask the other five questions about the book, and then we'd post our answers the same day. A couple of weeks ago, Kailana and I noticed we were both planning to read East by Edith Pattou, so she suggested we read it at the same time and review it together. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It wasn’t a perfect story and wasn’t a five in my eyes, but it was a real and touching story. She wrote a short story that apparently sat in my subconscious for almost a week and then sprung back out – allowing me to think about it again. Roth was able to do this without me even realizing it. I was standing in the grocery store preparing to buy my wife some flowers to celebrate her passing a civil service promotional exam when I saw an orchid and it brought me right back to this book. The story itself was probably forgettable on it’s own if it weren’t for some of the apparent voodoo she put in it. She didn’t go with the typical YA that we’re used to from her but wrote a more literary-focused short story. ![]() I’ve read other books from Roth and this was a little bit different. ![]() I don’t know exactly why I didn’t know how I felt but part of it was that this story compared to some of the others in this series was a little more literary in it’s writing style. Ark tells a story of the inevitable meteor coming to destroy the Earth – specifically a story about a group of people who are working on classifying different plants before joining the others on their new planet. Not a “oh man, this book was fantastic” but more of a… “ hmm I don’t know how I feel about this book” kind of shock. When I first finished this book, I was kind of in a state of shock.
